Garden gates
A gate is the first piece of outdoor joinery a visitor touches. We make ours in solid hardwood — typically iroko or sapele — with the same attention to frame, panel, joint and finish as everything else that leaves this workshop.
Both designs shown here are made to order. Drawn to your exact opening, hung in the correct ironmongery, and finished with a UV-stable hardwood oil that lets the timber weather naturally without maintenance coats every season.
Two designs
Three rails, two or three raised panels per leaf, moulded stiles. The pattern comes from joinery rather than fencing — the same construction as an interior door, made for the outside. The gate in these photographs is iroko with black cast-iron strap hinges and ring latch.
Close-fitted vertical boards on a solid hardwood frame, with a flat capping rail top and bottom. Cleaner and more contemporary than the panelled design — better suited to modern or rendered houses. The same hardwood, the same joinery principles, the same finish.
Construction
Garden gates from most suppliers are fence panels with a latch. Ours are made with the same principles as an interior door — mortise and tenon or bridle joints at the corners, proper stile and rail section, hardwood throughout. They hang straight, stay square, and last.
Iroko and sapele are both stable hardwoods that perform well outside in the UK climate. They oil naturally, develop a silver-grey patina if left, or hold a warm brown if oiled once a year. Either is correct.

Five names, one workshop
Square & True, Bryn Hall, Sporting Cabinetmakers and Fire & Oak are trading names of Reeve & Co Interiors Ltd. Old Fashioned Bathrooms is the bathroom company in the same yard at Mickfield. The drawings, the bench, the spray shop and the fitting team are the same.
